History should be more of a focus on education for younger people, along with teaching it in a context of current events.

Don't you think all education should be continual and all should cover past (history) to present? Thinker
0 Thoughtful
Possibly, but I was speaking about history specifically.

How can young people understand the breadth of history when they have so little life experience? Thinker
0 Thoughtful
This is why there needs to be more focus on history in education

What would be the benefits of youth gaining an appreciation of history, and do you think there are any topics that would be especially beneficial? Explorer

It's not an appreciation of history, it's knowing the past so they can make better decisions. The younger generation will be in charge at some point.

In order for people to understand history, to understand what has happened in the past they need to somehow relate to it personally? Thinker
0 Thoughtful
I don't think so. We need to know the past to succeed in the future. This is less about personal events, and more about the good of society/the world.

Isn't one of the problems that the kids in the class lose interest if they can't relate to what is being taught? Thinker
0 Thoughtful
That is the same for every subject. The point is that people need to learn from the past - currently it seems like everything gets forgotten after 1-2 generations. The only way to solve this is for more people to understand the past.

Are young people emotionally ready to grapple with the moral weight of historical events? SilentOne
0 Thoughtful
They still need to learn, even if it's difficult; plus, they have to deal with the moral weight of current events!

What is the most important way to stop each new political party from re-writing history? Thinker
0 Thoughtful
This is what I stated in my belief. (History should be more of a focus on education for younger people, along with teaching it in a context of current events)
0 Thoughtful
Who/what do you believe is stopping this from happening? Thinker
0 Thoughtful
Politics. Some people do not want young people to be well versed in history. Also, many (most?) kids find history boring, mainly because of how it is taught.

Do you believe people are afraid of the truth? By politics, do you mean vested interests, greed, politicians being bought off? or is the effect of religious beliefs playing a big roll in interpreting our past? Thinker
0 Thoughtful
I mean literal politics. Changing the school curriculum is fraught with difficulty, and the political capital is usually spent somewhere else - like getting re-elected.

What would you like the readers of this conversation to take away from it? Thinker

I am not sure.
